Human: Engraved pewter beaker with lid, created by Friederich, Baron von der Trenck in 1763, Germany. Museum accession number M.148-1930. This beaker is one of several masterpieces engraved by Friederich, Baron von der Trenck (1726-94), a renowned soldier of fortune. Implicated as a spy after his ill-fated romance with Frederick the Great's sister, he wrote about his time in Fort Etoile, Magdeburg in The Life and Surprising Adventures of Frederick Baron Trenck. In this autobiography, he details how he honed his engraving skills by etching satires and drawings on a tin cup using the point of his nail: "Daylight inspired me to create while imprisoned; I perfected my art, and my first attempt, though imperfect, was showcased in the city." The V&A's beaker showcases scenes from Baron von der Trenck's imprisonment and Aesop's fables. One scene depicts him chained to a wall after multiple escape attempts.
