It's a custom-made phone that has a generic cheap smartphone under the hood, specifically a Samsung S4 Mini. It constantly measures the voltage at the speaker of the handset, detecting when someone is speaking by the rising voltage. This triggers the font field to flash rapidly until someone picks it up or 10 seconds pass. The German phrase "GEH RAN!!" translates to "ANSWER IT". In standby mode, with no one speaking or picked up, the font field glows at a steady 6% PWM. It gets plugged into a generic USB charger that powers the phone, LEDs, and microcontroller. Initially, it was planned to build two of these units for art exhibitions, where visitors could talk to the other venue. However, due to issues obtaining another matching handset, this idea was scrapped. Instead, one unit was built to play Jerry B. Anderson's wisdoms. Another challenge arose with the phone's insane antenna transmission power during GSM calls. The LED leads act as an antenna, causing the microcontroller to malfunction. To mitigate this issue, the phone must be placed at least 80cm away from the unit or proper shielding must be implemented for it to function correctly. The program is written in plain C and does not rely on timer interrupts or switch case flow controls. The logic is simple but buggy, giving it a rough-around-the-edges machine feel. Ingredients: * PIC12F1572 microcontroller * BC 337 NPN transistor * Several LEDs * Cheap handset with a 2.5mm 4-pin jack * Various resistors * Generic Micro USB to A lead * Keyboard key for the hang-up switch * Multiple 3D printed parts * Four screws
