The Baureihe 252 (from 1992: Baureihe 156) was the last new development of an electric locomotive of the German Reichsbahn. It was designed as a complement to the DR-Baureihe 250, in further series as a successor to the DR-Baureihe 251 on the 25 kilovolt 50 hertz electrified Rübelandbahn and also as a locomotive for transit traffic with a maximum speed of 160 km/h. This locomotive was intended for use on the main line West Berlin-Hannover via Berlin-Staaken-Oebisfelde, which was under construction at that time.
