German artist Josef Hartwig created a 32-piece chess set for Bauhaus between 1923-1924, using only circles, squares and lines to emphasize movement. The bishop is X-shaped, symbolizing diagonal moves, while the queen's near limitless movements are represented by a sphere atop a cube. By removing traditional religious and monarchical symbols, Hartwig aimed to modernize the game.
