The Yamato battleship, lead ship of the Yamato class in the Japanese Navy during WWII, was an engineering marvel and the largest and most powerful battleship ever built. Displacing 72,000 tons, it was armed with nine 46 cm Type 94 main guns. Its hull, armour protection, gunnery, and optics were superior to other country's battleships of that time, providing tremendous precision in its main gunfire. Commissioned after the Pearl Harbor attack, she served as a flagship throughout 1942. However, she never fought against the US fleet; her only main gun firing against enemy surface targets was during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944, targeting US escort carriers and destroyers. In April 1945, Yamato was dispatched on a kamikaze mission to Okinawa where she was sunk by American bombers and torpedo bombers, resulting in the death of most of her crew. The Lightwave format model includes animation controls for various ship elements like guns, turrets, lights, etc., and is based on blueprints, photos, and historical documentation for a faithful digital reproduction.
