The Yamato battleship, lead ship of the Yamato class in the Imperial Japanese Navy during WWII, is a historical marvel. Displacing about 72,000 tons at full load and armed with nine 46 cm Type 94 main guns, it was the heaviest, largest, and most powerful battleship ever built. Its hull, armour protection, gunnery, and optics were superior to other country's battleships of that time, giving it tremendous precision in its main gunfire. Laid down in 1937 and commissioned after the Pearl Harbor attack in late 1941, Yamato served as the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet throughout 1942. It never fought against the US battleship fleet but fired its main guns against enemy surface targets during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944. In April 1945, Yamato was dispatched on a 'kamikaze' mission to Okinawa and sunk by American carrier-based bombers and torpedo bombers, with most of its crew dying. The model of this historic ship is available in Lightwave format, allowing animation control over various elements such as guns, turrets, lights, etc., and is based on blueprints, photos, and historical documentation for precision and detail.
