Sissoi Veliky, a pre-dreadnought battleship, was constructed for the Imperial Russian Navy in the late 1800s. The ship's construction faced numerous challenges, including organizational and engineering problems, which delayed its completion for over five years. Sissoi Veliky was finally commissioned in October 1896 with several design flaws that were never fully addressed during her service life. Following a successful sea trial, the battleship sailed to the Mediterranean to enforce the naval blockade of Crete during the Greco-Turkish War. However, its voyage came to an abrupt end on March 15, 1897, when it suffered a devastating explosion in its aft gun turret, resulting in the loss of 21 lives. After a nine-month layover in Toulon for repairs, Sissoi Veliky sailed to the Far East to reinforce Russian interests. In the summer of 1900, the battleship played a supporting role in the international campaign against the Boxer Rebellion in China. Its sailors participated in the defense of the International Legations in Beijing for over two months. In 1902, Sissoi Veliky returned to Kronstadt for repairs, but significant progress was not made until the early losses of the Russo-Japanese War led to the formation of the Second Pacific Squadron to relieve Russian forces blockaded in Port Arthur. The battleship sailed to the Far East with the rest of the Baltic fleet and participated in the Battle of Tsushima on May 27, 1905. During the battle, Sissoi Veliky managed to survive the daytime artillery duel with Admiral Heihachiro Togo's ships, but was badly damaged and taking on water. That night, Japanese destroyers scored a torpedo hit on the ship, damaging its steering system. The next morning, the battleship was unable to maintain speed due to flooding, and its crew was forced to surrender to Japanese armed merchant cruisers. The ship eventually capsized later that morning with the loss of 47 crew members.
