Navarin: A Russian Battleship Built for the Baltic Fleet in the Late 1880s and Early 1890s. The Navarin was a pre-dreadnought battleship constructed by the Imperial Russian Navy between the late 1880s and early 1900s. This formidable warship served with the Baltic Fleet, spending its early years stationed in both the Mediterranean and the Far East. In 1900, it played a crucial role in suppressing the Boxer Rebellion before returning to the Baltic Fleet in 1901. Months after the start of the Russo-Japanese War in February 1904, Navarin was reassigned to the 2nd Pacific Squadron to relieve the Russian forces trapped in Port Arthur. During the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905, Japanese destroyers laid a devastating trap for the Navarin, deploying twenty-four linked mines across its path overnight. The ship struck two of these deadly explosives and capsized, resulting in heavy losses among its crew. Navarin's unique four-stack arrangement earned it the nickname "Zavod," which translates to "factory" in English. Although test prints revealed some issues with the rear barrels at a small scale, this innovative design was still a testament to the ship's engineering prowess.
