A combat or battle helmet is a type of personal armor, specifically designed to protect the head during combat. Dating back to ancient Akkadians/Sumerians in 23rd century BC, they have evolved significantly with changing weapons technology. Initially made from leather and brass, helmets progressed to bronze, iron, and eventually steel as advanced materials were discovered. Originally used purely for military purposes, their use declined after 1670 due to advancements in firearms. However, they re-emerged during the Napoleonic era for cavalry soldiers until World War I, which renewed the need for steel helmets like the French Adrian and British Brodie helmet. Today, militaries prefer high-quality helmets made of ballistic materials like Kevlar and Twaron, offering improved protection against ballistics and non-ballistic threats such as concussive shock waves from explosions. Modern combat helmets have been adapted for modern warfare needs, featuring STANAG rails for attaching cameras, video cameras, and Night Vision Goggle (NVG) shrouds. Helmet covers, initially mesh nets and now camouflage cloth, provide greater camouflage on the battlefield. The late 20th century saw a shift from steel to advanced materials like Kevlar and Twaron for improved weight, ballistics protection, and blast injury prevention. This trend continues into the 21st century with ongoing advancements in material fibers, helmet design, shape, and modularity, exemplified by helmets such as the American PASGT, Spanish MARTE, Italian SEPT-2 PLUS, and British Mk6.
