In the Star Wars universe, Battle Droids are robotic combat units developed earlier for use as frontline troops by the Trade Federation Army and Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars era. Mass-produced on Confederate planets like Geonosis, some droids survived into the Galactic Civil War and Legacy era. Initially created by Nute Gunray, Viceroy of the Trade Federation, to counter pirate attacks, the droids were later used in an attack against the peaceful planet of Naboo. Their superior military might easily overpowered Naboo's forces, leading to the imprisonment of many citizens and numerous deaths.
