In November 2016, the Bohusläns Museum conducted an archaeological investigation of a defense work (RAÄ Lundby 132:1) on Lilla Aspholmen in Gothenburg. The remains consisted of a 13 x 10 meter large platform made of both flagstones and broken stone, constructed at the highest point on the island. It is likely that the remains formed the foundation for a battery position, and much suggests that it was never completed. Unfortunately, the remains could not be dated with certainty, and since there are no archive materials that mention it, it is estimated that the construction took place in 1811. From this year, it is known that Swedish military readiness was increased as a result of the various political complications of the Napoleonic Wars. This meant that a smaller Swedish naval force was stationed on Aspholmarna during the summer of 1811. Therefore, it can be assumed that the relevant battery position on Lilla Aspholmen was built in this phase, and with the intention of strengthening the defense of Gothenburg.
