Batman: Under the Red Hood - Helmet
thingiverse
This model represents my interpretation of Jason Todd's helmet from the animated movie Batman: Under the Red Hood. I've strived to accurately capture every detail and proportion, including front, back, and side angles, as well as match the scale to perfection. The original helmet was sculpted in Mudbox, after which I used Rhino to add additional details. Upon scaling up the model, it proved slightly too small for my average-sized adult male head. To accommodate this, I made some modifications after building the model, allowing it to fit comfortably on my head. If I were to recreate the helmet again, I'd likely scale it up by 1%. One area that still requires improvement is the eyes. Ideally, one would wear a silicone mask underneath for optimal visibility, but the cartoon proportions of Jason Todd's eyes make it challenging to see out clearly when matched closely. To address this, I recommend using tinted inserts with chrome or backlit eyes; however, my original helmet was too small to accommodate these features. As an alternative solution, I've included a printable eye mask that can be inserted between the face and the helmet. If someone wishes to make the model more spacious by hollowing it out, feel free to remix it. The current design fit me snugly without padding or wobbling, but thinning the walls might make it easier to put on. Two versions of the model are included in this upload: "Solid" and "Split." The "Solid" version is a single one-piece helmet that I ultimately used for my final build. In contrast, the "Split" version consists of two separate pieces that fit together along the seams without the need for magnets or any other adhesives. I find the "Split" model more appealing because it allows for greater flexibility and accuracy when printing in multiple parts. However, printing in two parts can push the limits of your printer's capabilities. My first attempt at this was not successful, requiring a significant amount of sanding to achieve a smooth finish. To accommodate smaller printers, I've included a cut-up version of the "Solid" helmet with no eyes. Support is not strictly necessary for the model that I sliced up, but I used it anyway. In retrospect, it might have been unnecessary since the underside of the model will likely go unseen.
