Batman is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939 as the "Bat-Man," later referred to as the Caped Crusader, Dark Knight, or World's Greatest Detective. Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy and philanthropist who owns Wayne Enterprises, is Batman's secret identity. After witnessing his parents' murder as a child, he vowed vengeance against criminals while tempering his oath with a sense of justice. Bruce trains himself physically and intellectually to fight crime, crafting a bat-inspired persona. Batman operates in Gotham City with assistance from characters such as Alfred, Jim Gordon, and Robin. Unlike most superheroes, Batman lacks superpowers but possesses a genius-level intellect, is an expert martial artist, and has access to a vast arsenal of equipment due to his wealth. A large array of villains makes up Batman's rogues gallery, including the Joker, his archenemy. The character gained popularity soon after his introduction in 1939 and received his own comic book title in 1940. Over the years, different creators worked to return the character to its dark roots, culminating in Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" in 1986. Warner Bros.' live-action Batman feature films have maintained the character's prominence in mainstream culture. Batman has been licensed and featured in various adaptations, including radio, television, film, and merchandise such as apparel, toys, and video games. Kevin Conroy, Rino Romano, Anthony Ruivivar, Peter Weller, Bruce Greenwood, Jason O'Mara, and Will Arnett have provided the character's voice for animated adaptations. Batman has been portrayed in live-action films by Lewis Wilson, Robert Lowery, Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Iain Glen.
