This sculpture is crafted by Alfred-Alphonse Bottiau (1889–1951), a renowned French sculptor who brought his artistic vision into being through dedication and perseverance. Born in Valenciennes, he pursued early studies in his hometown before moving to Paris to hone his skills under the guidance of Jean Antoine Injalbert, where he emerged as runner-up for the prestigious Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1919. Before focusing on art, Bottiau served in the army from 1910 until 1919, demonstrating his commitment to both creative pursuits and civic duty. As director of the Écoles Académiques de Valenciennes from 1946 to 1951, he played a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of his hometown.
