Batavia hull (1629)
sketchfab
On June 4, 1629, at dawn, the VOC ship Batavia suffered a catastrophic wreck on the Houtman Abrolhos, off Western Australia's coast.\nThree hundred thirty-four years later, in 1963, fishermen and divers finally located the sunken remains of the Batavia. \nThe Department of Maritime Archaeology conducted thorough excavations between 1972 and 1976 to uncover the secrets of Batavia's wreckage. During this excavation process, a significant portion of the ship's hull was carefully unearthed. The hull was meticulously recorded and lifted out of the water. After years of meticulous conservation treatment, the salvaged remains were skillfully rebuilt in Fremantle's Shipwreck Galleries. Today, it serves as the showpiece for the Batavia Gallery display. This remarkable section accurately depicts the stern quarter of the port side of the ship up to the top of its first gun-deck, including the transom and sturdy stern-post.
