The Minor and Royal Shrine of the Virgin of the Way is located in La Virgen del Camino, a town belonging to the municipality of Valverde de la Virgin, in the province of Leon, Spain. It is dedicated to the Virgin of the Way, patron saint of the region of Leon and the city of Pamplona, and it is located on the Route of Santiago, from which it receives its name. The current basilica was built between 1957 and 1961 by architect Father Coello of Portugal in place of an earlier shrine that had become too small to accommodate all parishioners and pilgrims. Its construction was partially funded by patron Pablo Diez, owner of Grupo Modelo, a multinational brewery from Mexico. It is governed by the Dominican Order, who promoted a modern church style, both in its architecture and sculptural decoration.
