Bastet, also known as Bast, was an ancient Egyptian goddess who took charge of safeguarding the Pharaohs from harm. The people living in the lower Nile valley first depicted Bastet as a fierce lion-headed deity with a ferocious reputation. Later on, around 1000 BCE, the Egyptians gave her a new look - a strong and agile body matched with the head of a domesticated house cat.
