The medallion in the centre of the basin is decorated with the head of Medusa. The basin, like its pendant, was once part of the decoration of thermae (baths) or a fountain. Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692-1779) placed them in his Roman villa in the centre of the so-called Marcus Aurelius atrium.
