The ancient basin was once home to sacred waters, a gift of profound significance bestowed upon the temple of Gof Ningirsu by Gudea, the esteemed governor of Lagash. In exquisite relief, the scene of a winged goddess stretching down from the heavens is vividly depicted, her hands grasping two identical vessels from which water flows freely and merges with the turbulent waters erupting from similar containers held by two other goddesses below. This breathtaking scene is dramatically repeated seven times around the basin, its beauty and significance leaving an indelible mark on all who lay eyes upon it.
