Discovered in the United States and Egypt, it is one of the most well-known ancient whales. Despite its name, Basilosaurus is not related to modern-day reptiles; instead, it represents a critical stage in whale evolution. With its serpentine body reaching up to 60 feet in length, Basilosaurus was fully aquatic, possessing vestigial hind limbs indicative of its terrestrial ancestry. It likely preyed on fish and other marine creatures, providing valuable insights into the transition from land to sea in cetaceans.
