Friar Anthony of Padua Teixeira played a pivotal role as the first vicar, officiating the inaugural mass within a temporary chapel, erected temporarily during the construction process which was formally inaugurated on March 25, 1781. Notably buried at this site is Francisco Barreto Leme, the founder of Campinas, who met his final rest on April 13, 1782. Campinas developed around Bento Quirino Square, the primary headquarters area often referred to as "Celulla Mater." Originally a key crossing point for drovers heading towards Goiás, it eventually grew into a significant urban center. By 1807, there was consensus to relocate the parish's headquarters and build a new church, resulting in the completion of Campinas' Cathedral of Our Lady da Conceição by 1883. This magnificent structure was dubbed "The Young Mother." However, after losing its role as the main parish due to changes in urban development and governance, it successfully reclaimed its position when approved by the Bishop of São Paulo. A result was the founding of the Old Mother Church – formally known as Parish of Santa Cruz on May 8th, 1870. After several renovations in 1938, the church's status officially changed to N. Sra. do Carmo Parish. Significant transformations were observed within the years leading up to and including a complete renovation in 1929 that gave the structure its current neo-Gothic design. It gained its new prestigious title as a Basilica through the blessing received from Pope Paul VI on November 6, 1974. A pivotal ceremony marking this monumental achievement occurred June 22nd during the Holy Year of 1975, where the site officially transformed into the cherished church known today. This revered house of worship carries deep significance among residents and is remembered affectionately as the first established place of prayer within Campinas – colloquially dubbed the "Old Mother Church."
