Basilica di S.Maria in Trastevere | Navata

The central nave is split apart by 22 granite columns on each side, counting a single column at the far right that forms a closed span. This does not include the two supporting pillars that hold up the triumphal arch. The arch itself boasts a vibrant fresco titled "The Virgin, Angels and Patriarchs Noah and Moses", which was painted in 1870 by the skilled artist Cochetti. These granite columns originate from the ancient Baths of Caracalla and feature intricately carved Ionic and Corinthian capitals. Tall windows line the walls of the central nave, with three located on the right side and four on the left. This restoration project is a direct result of Pius IX's renovation efforts, guided by Vespignani himself, who also oversaw the completion of the first two intercolumns in the right aisle. The current floor design is a product of extensive renovations carried out to emulate the cosmateschi technique and style, which were characteristic of medieval craftsmanship.
