I would suggest using a material that flexes rather than shattering. Consider something like metal or plastic, but not just any type - one that will bend instead of breaking. You could also check for bugs and let me know if you find any. BCD and tooth count are two key variables to adjust. Currently, they're set at 104 BCD and 32 teeth, respectively. To reduce the crushing force on the plastic from the bolts, you can try setting the bolt holes larger and fitting a section of brass pipe in place.
