Base of a grave stele

This ancient tombstone was unearthed northwestern of Athens, near the historic Academy. The face and sides of its pedestal are intricately carved with dramatic depictions of battles between a mounted warrior, the deceased person's likeness, and a fallen hoplite soldier. Specific details such as the spear wielded by the rider and the reins held by his horses would have been vividly depicted in paint. The top surface of the pedestal features a rectangular recess designed for the insertion of another stone slab.
