The Blockade of Petersburg, also known as the Siege of Leningrad, was a prolonged military blockade conducted mainly by Germany's Army Group North against Petersburg, historically and currently known as Saint Petersburg, on the Eastern Front theatre of World War II. The siege began on September 8, 1941, when the last road to the city was severed. Although the Soviet Union managed to establish a narrow land corridor to the city on January 18, 1943, the blockade was only lifted on January 27, 1944, 872 days after it started. It remains one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history and possibly the costliest in terms of losses.
