The ancient Hindu legend of Samudra manthan is one of the most revered stories in mythology. This epic tale is told across three sacred texts: the Bhagavata Purana, the Mahabharata, and the Vishnu Purana. It recounts the origin of amrita, a mystical elixir that grants immortality. This remarkable image is a plaster cast of a section from the intricate bas-relief carvings at Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia. Crafted by Joseph Ghilardi, it showcases the artistic skill and attention to detail of the ancient artisans who created this magnificent work of art. The cast was taken during the Louis Delaporte Mission and is now proudly displayed at The Musée Guimet in Paris.
