The Revolt of Horea, Cloșca and Crișan erupted on 31 October 1784 in Zarand County, Transylvania, and swiftly spread throughout all Transylvania and the Apuseni Mountains. The leaders of this uprising were Horea (Vasile Ursu Nicola, born 1731, died 1785), Cloșca (Ion Oargă, born 1747, died 1785) and Crișan (Marcu Giurgiu, born 1733, died 1785). The revolt was brought to an end by Horea on 14 December 1784 at Câmpeni. In January 1785, the leaders were captured through betrayal. Horea and Cloșca were put to death by the Hungarian authorities using breaking on the wheel on 28 February 1785 at Dealul Furcilor (Forks Hill), Alba-Iulia. Crișan took his own life on the night before the execution. This relief forms part of a trio of busts depicting those who initiated the revolt, available for download from Scan the World.
