Bas-relief dedicated to Manenos
myminifactory
The dramatic scene rises sharply from a plate of intricately carved gilded limestone. At its base, a Greek inscription cut into the stone provides the dedication of this monumental work. In the center of the scene, a majestic cavalier stands out, proudly dressed and armed. This is Manenos, a local deity revered in the region of Palmyrene. The god rides a horse adorned with luxurious harnesses. Beside him, but slightly behind, a figure draped in Roman attire stands facing the rider, making an offering to his divinity. The quality of the limestone and the style of the figurative scene suggest that this bas-relief originated from Doura-Europos, a significant Hellenistic and Roman site situated on the banks of the Euphrates River in present-day Syria.
