Baryonyx (/bæriˈɔnɪks/) is a type of fierce theropod dinosaur that lived during the Barremian stage of the Early Cretaceous period, about 130-125 million years ago. The first Baryonyx skeleton was uncovered in 1983 in the Weald Clay Formation of Surrey, England, and became the key specimen of Baryonyx walkeri, named by top paleontologists Alan J. Charig and Angela C. Milner in 1986. The name Baryonyx means strong claw and highlights its massive claw on the first finger; the name walkeri honors its discoverer, skilled amateur fossil collector William J. Walker. The key specimen is one of the most complete theropod skeletons from the UK (and remains the most complete spinosaurid), and its discovery drew significant media attention. Fossils later found in other parts of the United Kingdom and Iberia have also been classified as Baryonyx.
