This iron padlock and shackle was unearthed during archaeological excavations at Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfries and Galloway between the years of 1955 and 1966. Initially, this item would have been secured with a bolt that is currently nowhere to be found. Locking mechanisms of this type were extremely common throughout the 1400s and 1500s.
