Barrel Design of a Pen
thingiverse
This is the core of a pen, the most obvious place to start designing one. It's the part that grabs our attention first. I created this design to show how education can involve learning new techniques while working on everyday items we use every day. Designing this twisting model was a great experience for me while I learned how to create it. Print Settings Printer Brand: Ultimaker Printer: Ultimaker 2 Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: Yes Post-Printing I don't have a printer, but I'll post the final product as soon as the semester break is over. How I Designed This I used both the sculpt and model techniques. The body of the barrel has three parts - the middle part is a circular pattern created by intersecting two sketches. The top and bottom are connected afterwards. The pen holder was made in sculpt mode. Project: Barrel Design of a Pen Objectives Students will learn how rapid prototyping helps them view their ideas as real products, not just virtual concepts. They'll also gain experience with different tools to help them come up with new design ideas. Audiences This project is perfect for high school students like myself - it's an easy-to-follow beginner to intermediate level task. Preparation While designing this, they should be able to sketch dimensions, draw sketches, and create objects from those sketches to combine them at the end of the process. Steps First, select a plane to work on. Then, sketch half of the pen barrel in two dimensions. After that, revolve it around to create a shell at your selected dimensions. Create an object and cut it into three parts - you'll have the bottom and a part to attach the holder. Using the middle one of these objects, sketch how the pattern would look like and create one of them. Symmetrically extrude it to get the intersection and create a circular pattern. Then combine the three objects and you'll have the barrel. You can add any other parts for a better design. Results Students should have created a pen barrel, a single object project that they can print out. If they want, they could also add their own ideas to make it even more unique.
