Barrel cleaning patch-catch box
prusaprinters
FOREWORDEvery time I need to clean one of my long firearms it's a mess, and I like to clean'em frequently.Somebody already came up with ideas like this, to collect oil, residues, dirt patches from cleaning operation. Unfortunately similar stuff is nowhere to be found around my Country for cheap, so I decided to make my own design. MODEL DESCRIPTION AND OTHER INFOSo, my patch-catch box come with a hinged lid. Print separate parts, possibly use transparent PLA or similar, and join them together. Hinge diameter pass through hole is 2,5mm. Just use a couple of correct diameter nails or M2.5 hex head screws + nuts. Once paired, the two parts should click right in place. This is what you are gonna get after printing and joining. Now with the muzzle opening. Initially I wanted to make that hole shaped like an over under shotgun muzzle, so it would have accomodate both rifles and clay shotguns. But then I thought, what about hunting side by sides? So I had a cross shape in mind, but then I started thinking about drilling rifles and other combination guns… so in the end it's just a stupid rectangular opening measuring 60mm height x 55mm wide. Actually a bit taller than 60mm, because of the rounded shape of the protrusion that's gonna sit on the barrel/rib. If you are wondering why the opening is taller than wider, from my measuring test apparently, most over and under shotguns are taller than most side by side shotguns are wide. Top view of the protrusion that must be placed on the barrel/s. So, in order to secure the printed box to your firearm, note the protrusion comes with two cuts, 20mm wide each. You are gonna help yourself with a hook loop from elastic bands or electic cable ties, ecc. Trust me, you're gonna find plenty of these for cheap if you know where to look for. There's not much else to say about this design… but be careful, and always double check your guns are safe before undergoing maintenance or cleaning operations.I believe I'll print shortly these parts myself (because I need to clean some guns lol) and I will update this model with real pictures soon. Unfortunately I am short on transparent filament at the moment, so I'll probably just print them solid. HOW I DESIGNED THISThis thing was modeled using Onshape. I started from a popular public domain hinged box, reviewed the model dimensions for what I needed (for instance, the lid was raised a lot to make room for rifles or carbines with bulky front sights), and designed all the stuff related to the muzzle opening.
