The British designed and built the Fairey Barracuda as a carrier-borne torpedo and dive bomber during World War II, marking a significant milestone with its metal construction as the first of its kind used by the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. Replacing the outdated Fairey Swordfish and Fairey Albacore biplanes, the Barracuda was instrumental in launching attacks against the German battleship Tirpitz. Its awkward appearance on land has become a notable characteristic, reflecting its primary function as an aircraft designed for takeoff and landing from naval carriers rather than for ground-based operations.
