Samford Ecological Research Facility of Queensland University of Technology in Australia was once located on the site where the Columbia Roller Skating Rink used to be at Brisbane City Hall. When the rink closed down in the 1920s, materials were reused to build barracks for office workers at the Samford quarry that mined granite for the new Brisbane City Hall. In 1942, the "Barracks" was relocated from the quarry and rebuilt on its current location. Construction management students of Queensland University of Technology assisted with refurbishing the premises between 2007-2009. On July 8, 2020, QUT's internship high school students within the STEM program helped complete data collection by Research Engineering Facility using Inspire2 remotely piloted aircraft systems.
