Baroque gardens required a large number of gardeners and continual trimming, which made them expensive to maintain. In the later part of the Baroque period, the formal elements began to be replaced with more natural features, such as winding paths, groves of varied trees left untrimmed, and rustic architecture. The Baroque style declined in popularity in the mid-18th century, when it was largely replaced by the neoclassical style. By the 19th century, Baroque was a target for ridicule and criticism. Today, the term "Baroque" is often used to describe works of art that are thought to have excessive ornamentation or complexity of line.
