The Baroque style was a popular architectural and artistic movement from the 17th to the mid-18th century. It emphasized grandeur, drama, and emotion through elaborate decorations and dramatic lighting effects. The style originated in Italy in the early 17th century, where it developed into two main styles: the Roman Baroque, which featured large-scale structures with imposing facades, and the Florentine Baroque, characterized by ornate decoration and complex compositions. The Baroque style spread throughout Europe, particularly in France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Poland, Italy, Russia, and the Netherlands. It was popularized by royal courts and nobility, who commissioned grand palaces, churches, and gardens to showcase their wealth and power. The most famous examples of Baroque architecture include St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, the Palace of Versailles in France, and the Royal Palace of Caserta near Naples. The purpose of a Baroque garden was to illustrate the power of man over nature and the glory of its builder. They were designed as geometric patterns, with straight lanes and alleys dividing and crisscrossing the garden. The gardens often featured parterres of flower beds or low hedges trimmed into ornate designs, terraces, ramps, staircases, and cascades to create viewing points. Circular or rectangular ponds or basins of water were set up for fountains and statues. Baroque gardens required a large number of gardeners and continual trimming, which made them expensive to maintain. In the later part of the Baroque period, the formal elements began to be replaced with more natural features, such as winding paths, groves of varied trees left untrimmed, and rustic architecture. The Baroque style declined in popularity in the mid-18th century, when it was largely replaced by the neoclassical style. The pioneer German art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann condemned the Baroque style, praising classical art and architecture instead. By the 19th century, Baroque was a target for ridicule and criticism. However, in the 20th century, the Baroque style underwent a rehabilitation of sorts, with art historians such as Heinrich Wölfflin identifying it as a distinct artistic movement. Today, the term "Baroque" is often used to describe works of art that are thought to have excessive ornamentation or complexity of line. Despite its decline in popularity, the Baroque style remains an important part of art history and continues to influence contemporary architecture and design.
