This distinctive crescent-shaped stone enjoys a prime vantage point overlooking Osmonds Gill on Barningham Moor. As documented in the 1998 publication 'Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale', this carving was added to the ERA database by NADRAP as 'Barningham Moor 89' in 2008. Their findings include: "The motifs consist of eleven depressions, with only four appearing to be typically human-made, two large and deep cups located at the northern edge, and two further cups on the eastern half. Five other cups are irregular or shallow and may be either artificial or the result of erosion..." On the 3D model, the most westerly and smallest cup (nearest) appears to feature an inner ring and a partial hexagon. Is this natural? The ERA record is available at https://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/era/section/panel/overview.jsf?eraId=890. Historic England has designated the area as schedulable at https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1017441. A 3D model was created from six stereo pairs captured by NADRAP Team 5 in June and October 2006, forming part of the full NADRAP archive.
