Barningham Moor 57 (Sept 2006)

The stone lies atop Eel Hill's summit, nestled within Barningham Moor, County Durham. This carving stands out in several respects; its placement near the peak, a large bowl, and a motif carved in relief are just a few distinct features. Other designs include cups, cups with rings, and a linear groove. Whether all these motifs are contemporaneous remains unknown, but the carving created in relief appears to differ significantly from the other designs. Does the groove dividing the northern part of the rock distinguish old carvings from new ones? This is purely speculative! Tim Laurie first noted this stone and included it in his 1998 publication with Stan Beckensall, 'Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale, and Wensleydale,' as reference 69. In 2008, NADRAP added it to ERA under the designation 'Barningham Moor 57.' ERA record: https://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/era/section/panel/overview.jsf?eraId=856 The model was generated from four stereo pairs captured by NADRAP Team 5 in September 2006. This imagery is part of the full NADRAP archive deposited with Historic England.
