Carved rock discovered in Washbeck Green area of Barningham Moor, County Durham, boasts an intriguing design.\nThe carving sits directly south of a leat and serves as the base of a cairn of unknown origin (potentially modern). The surface features 30+ cup-like marks of varying size skillfully carved into the thin bedding layers. Fifteen examples are referenced in Beckensall & Laurie’s 1998 publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale’, while it was added to ERA as ‘Barningham Moor 39’ by NADRAP in 2008. The Historic England scheduling suggests that this carving may have been reused as a cist cover in a burial cairn.
