Barningham Moor 39 (March 2008)
sketchfab
Small ground-level angular stone discovered within a dense cluster of others north of Eel Hill, on Barningham Moor, County Durham. Cited as #21 in Beckensall & Laurie's 1998 publication 'Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale,' this carving was added to the ERA database by NADRAP as 'Barningham Moor 39' in 2008. This is yet another example of a stone on Barningham Moor featuring natural solution holes within possible cups. The question remains: did the solution occur after carving, or was the position of the cup chosen because the solution was significant? A 3D model suggests the latter for one of the cups. ERA record: https://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/era/section/panel/overview.jsf?eraId=838 Historic England area scheduling: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1017439 The 3D model was created from a single stereo pair captured by NADRAP Team 5 in March 2008. The imagery forms part of the ERA/NADRAP archive.
