This small ground level boulder stands proudly in a cluster of other carvings to the west of a probable Romano-British settlement below How Tallon on Barningham Moor, County Durham. During initial NADRAP recording, it had been thoroughly investigated and dismissed as natural several times due to its near vertical sides and the presence of a solution hole. However, during recording in low October sunlight, arcs or even rings became apparent, sparking a sense of excitement among the team. Could this be the elusive cup and ringed stone 56 referenced in Stan Beckensall and Time Laurie's 1998 publication 'Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale', the NADRAP team had been searching for? It certainly looked like it!
