The stone was discovered within a dense cluster of other carvings, situated north of Eel Hill on Barningham Moor in County Durham. It is positioned just east of Barningham Moor 108 and north of a small prehistoric enclosure. The carving is referenced as number 38 in Beckensall & Laurie's publication 'Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale', published in 1998. In 2008, the team at NADRAP added this stone to ERA as Barningham Moor 109. Upon recording, they noted: "Two possible cups are visible on this stone, separated by just 0.2 meters. The majority of the stone is covered in turf."
