The old Physic Well, also known as "Barnet Physic Well," has been attracting visitors for centuries at its location on Well Approach in Barnet. First discovered on Barnet Common during the 17th century, this medicinal spring quickly gained fame as a go-to destination for people dealing with various health issues. William Camden noted in his writings as early as 1586 that the water from this well was highly regarded by many physicians of the time, who praised its numerous benefits. In 1652, a journal reported that the water was being bottled and sold to those seeking relief. Diarist Samuel Pepys visited the well not once but twice, and recorded his experiences in his diary. He noted that after drinking three glasses of water from the well, he walked around and returned to drink two more. The woman managing the well wanted him to have a few more glasses, but he declined due to feeling full. However, he was pleased with how well the water worked for him, noting that it helped him in several ways. After visiting the well, Pepys went home and felt even better. In 1808, the well underwent significant renovations, including the addition of a subterranean arched chamber. Unfortunately, this building was removed just a few decades later, in 1840. It wasn't until the 1920s that the well was rediscovered by locals and visitors alike, who continue to seek out its healing properties to this day.
