The Barcelona Chair is designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for Spanish Royalty overseeing International Exposition of 1929 in Barcelona, Spain. It's first used at World Heritage Site Villa Tugendhat in Brno City, Czech Republic, created by Mies van der Rohe. Initially bolted together, the frame redesigns in 1950 with stainless steel giving it seamless and smooth appearance. Leather takes place of ivory pigskin on original pieces. Unlike many Bauhaus designers creating affordable furniture for everyone, this chair stands out as an exception. Designed for high-profile events described by Time magazine as part of its sumptuous German pavilion. Its shape resembles Roman folding chairs called Curule stools used by the aristocracy. Although Knoll Inc states that this chair appears to be manufactured industrially, much handwork goes into its creation. Manufactured since 1953 by Knoll Inc, the frames come in chrome and stainless steel with almost complete labor input from hands of craftsmen. Mies van der Rohe's signature is also imprinted onto each one under facsimile. Knoll isn't the only company producing Barcelona chairs as others create their own replicas and sell them under different names across the world. Modern architecture critic Tom Wolfe makes a satirical observation about the Barcelona chair in his 1981 book, saying owning it has become necessary for young architects like a symbol of divine mission in their homes, where seeing the holy object placed on sisal rugs confirms that they've achieved a higher standard by possessing this ultimate chair design.
