Barack Obama, born August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii, served as the United States' 44th president from 2009 to 2017. A Democratic Party member, he was the first African American elected to presidency. Before his presidential tenure, Obama was a U.S. senator for Illinois (2005-2008) and a civil rights attorney with academic experience at the University of Chicago Law School (1992-2004). He represented Illinois' 13th district in the state Senate from 1997 to 2004. In 2008, Obama was nominated for president after a primary campaign against Hillary Clinton and won over Republican John McCain, being inaugurated January 20, 2009. He received the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize nine months into his presidency.
