Bar-tailed godwits take top honors as the most common Arctic migrants to reach New Zealand's shores. In 2005, scientists documented an incredible feat – these remarkable birds flew a staggering non-stop distance of 11,000 kilometres from Alaska to New Zealand in just eight or nine days. Auckland Museum boasts an impressive collection that includes Limosa lapponica (Linnaeus, 1758), a species classified under Order: Charadriiformes and Family: Scolopacidae. Native to New Zealand, Bar-tailed godwits are currently facing declining numbers. For more information on these fascinating birds, visit the NZ Birds Online website.
