The Chinese Communists have created a physical "Bamboo Curtain" - they literally hung strips of paper, cloth or mesh between towns, hamlets and villages to conceal and protect themselves from spying outsiders! This was all so very effective against our reconnaissance aircraft - they couldn't find much to penetrate the cover. The concept of bamboo as metaphor still survives: it implies confinement in a cage-like network; and in effect that the world inside it knows very little of what is going on beyond it, even as people from other parts of China can freely roam through the Bamboo Curtain, while western journalists get arrested just by crossing into this communist world.
