Ball Lock Two Speed Robot Transmission

thingiverse

This 3D-printed exhibit showcases a USFIRST robotics team "The Tigertons 222" Ball Lock transmission model. Inspired by the '70s five-speed Hodaka motorcycle transmission, it has undergone design changes since 2004. One recent alteration relocates shifting relief springs outside the shaft. The unique mechanism utilizes steel balls to engage gears, with a plunger inside the shaft controlling shifting. A prototype video is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj6naPPiQOw, along with older videos and an animation at respective links. For more information, visit tigertrons.net and usfirst.org. Note that transmission files are not included for educational purposes; feel free to innovate based on the design. The pictures display a white ABS 3D print, a CNC-machined version, the original 2004 model, Hodaka shifting parts, and the complete Tigertrons robot.
