Ball in a Box

Ball in a Box

I designed this ball in a box when experimenting with various filaments started. To try something with PVA supports, I wanted to create something. This was printed several ways including single extrusion, dual extrusion, PLA with PVA supports, and TPU with PVA supports (not shown). PLA blue/red, PLA orange, and PLA pink with PVA supports are pictured. This is a fun little model to play with. The ball could be squeezed out in the TPU version but after one day of play, the box broke on that one. I haven't yet tried printing a TPU ball with a PLA box. Supports for the ball were needed when setting up the print. To prevent the bottoms of the box sphere corners from sticking to the print bed directly, I raised the models slightly so they would nestle in supports instead. When printing PVA, a raft was included since the PVA wasn't sticking to the bed. I also used this model to experiment with bridging and supports. The best prints for the box were made when supports were included but the drooping wasn't too bad without supports because I could pick off the worst couple strands. See photos. I wish I had a third extruder so I could print with two colors and PVA supports! My husband thinks it would make a good cat toy, but we don't have a cat to test it out.
