The balafon is a musical instrument from the xylophone family, also known as the xylophone or marimba. In West Africa (where it comes from) it was popularized by the Mande-Fu and Balante from Guinea and Sierra Leone, and then its use spread throughout the areas of the savannah and Sahel. The scooped-out gourd fruits placed on strings under wooden boards serve as sound boxes. It is played with two wooden sticks, which are used to strike individual boards. Thanks to the gourd resonators, it emits a full range of sounds.
