Bakfiets Style Cargo Bike Box

Bakfiets Style Cargo Bike Box

I managed to snag a used Bakfiets-style two-wheel cargo bike from Craigslist, but the previous owner had converted it into a courier bike, equipping it with a flat platform instead of the standard large bucket box. I wanted my 2-year-old son and me to ride together in the bucket box, so I had to build one myself. The box is primarily constructed from a sheet of 1/2-inch sanded plywood, reinforced by 1x2-inch red oak corner braces. The plans I'm sharing aren't entirely comprehensive; they mainly focus on providing the plywood cut dimensions that work with this frame. To create the curve along the top of the sides, I designed a quick single-use jig to use with my router (the radius of the jig arm is specified in the PDFs). When it came time to make the oak braces, I cut them based on pencil marks from the actual final dimensions. I also added an oak brace across the front edge because that area tends to take the most abuse. Finally, I installed a removable seat in the box, cut from a pine stair tread using my Shopbot CNC, with paracord woven into the middle to make it comfortable.
